Spotlight on Staff - Becci from Nomads Asia

Spotlight on Staff series - Becci from Nomads Asia

Becci has worked in the travel industry for over 6 years, starting in the UK, onto Australia and now based in Thailand. Becci took a year out from work and travelled from the UK to Australia on a Working Holiday Visa. She started her time with us at Nomads Melbourne, moved onto Nomads Cairns, Nomads Westend Sydney and finally ended up working in Head Office in Sydney where she began training before heading to Thailand. Becci is now the Reservations Manager for Nomads Asia, based in Bangkok.

In her own words Becci is "short, blonde and fairly loud". She originates from Brighton in the South East of England where the beaches have pebbles (not white sand). Although she is loving her time on the other side of the world it's the pebble beaches and the Autumn walks along the seafront with a hot cup of takeaway coffee that she misses most from home.

Becci loves shopping (like 99% of girls do!), drinking (go easy on those infamous Thai buckets Becci!), times with friends and family, music, cooking (she should be an expert on noodle dishes by now), laughing and trying to keep fit!

If you're interested in hearing more about Nomads Asia check out our Thailand backpackers hostels below or contact Becci on info @ nomadsasia (dot) com

Changing Style of Nomads Byron Bay

Nomads Byron Bay Backpackers hostel is going through a bit of a change at the moment. When the hostel first opened we had a very cool space theme (hence the hostels original name of Odyssey!). But we decided it was time for a new look, something more inkeeping with the vibe in Byron Bay so here is the start of... Tropical Bali.

Yes you are reading correctly: Tropical! We are getting rid of all the space style decorations because Byron Bay is paradise, so now the hostel will also make you feel like you're in paradise when you stay with us.

Our maintenance guys have been working hard to start redecorating the hostel and to begin with they've been hard at it in the courtyard. For a few days our guests weren't entirely sure what this was going to be:

Definitely a hut of some kind, but what exactly? Well check this out... Our wonderful maintenance guys have finished this awesome Bali Hut with relaxing hammocks and nice soft bean bags. The perfect way of enjoying your day in Byron Bay isn't it?

Imagine yourself lying in the hammock with a great book, after spending time in one of our two outdoor spas. Oh yes that's the good backpackers life. But the Bali Hut is not all that we're changing! We are also redecorating our common area and TV room! What exactly will be changed will remain top secret for now, but we are planning to finish this within the coming months, so come and check it out yourself.

If you are just as excited as we are, and a bit curious, we will keep you updated here and on Nomads Byron Bays facebook page. When our new style is completely finished we are planning on throwing a huge tropical party to show off our new Tropical Bali theme! BBQ, cocktails, snacks, limbo and hopefully some dancing performances from all of you! We'll keep you posted about the time and date so you don't miss out!

So girls, pack your coconut bikini and grass skirt and guys bring your Hawaiian shirts and head over to Nomads Byron Bay Backpackers hostel to chill & relax in our own little place called paradise in Byron Bay!

Spotlight on Staff - Bee and Paul at Nomads Cairns

Spotlight on Staff series. So far we've found out about Mark (afro-kidd) in Auckland (although he's now based in Queenstown!), Ronan from Nomads Queenstown and Craig from Nomads Arts Factory Lodge. This time it's the turn of Bryony (Bee) the General Manager of Nomads Cairns backpackers hostel and her husband Paul.

Bee and Paul met in a place called Renner Springs in the NT outback and apparently it's a "long and complicated story as to how we both got there but it was fate!". Aww! They got married in March 2001 at Turimetta Heads (north Sydney beaches) and in fact they recently got married again - how romantic!

Bee met Dev, our now Operations Manager for Nomads, in 2005 and started working at a Nomads Hostel in Kings Cross. The hostel was sold and Bee left us for a while when she returned to working in a hotel in The Rocks (Sydney) for 3 years. Bee and Dev never lost touch and she eventually returned to Nomads and began working at Nomads Westend backpackers hostel in 2008. At this time her husband Paul was running cafes in Sydney - "he is an amazing barista and chef".

In 2010 Bee and Paul were offered the opportunity to move to Hervey Bay to run the hostel and the new 4WD business (Nomads Fraser Island Tours). They stayed in Hervey Bay for a year and were then asked if they'd like to movee to Cairns to run Nomads Cairns backpackers hostel. They've now been in Cairns for one year and are loving it!

When asked what they most love about Cairns...? "The people, the weather, the laidback atmosphere and the way that the authorities look after the place - great facilities and stuff to do and so clean."

Even though Bee and Paul are known by many Nomads staff (especially on the East Coast of Australia) many people may not know that... "Despite how we look, we're pretty sporty - Paul used to play pro-football and I ran a marathon."

Mad Choice Bro! New Zealand tours!

It was late one night when our little marketing lady (known affectionately as the fidget midget) came out with the pretty out there names for our Mad Choice NZ packages... I mean, Mad Chilly Bin, Mad Chur Chur... seriously, us Aussies thought she had gone absolutely Mad until we discovered they were names of all things Kiwi that she loved along with famous phrases that make the Kiwi culture so unique.

So, when you sit there booking a "Mad Jandals pass" just remember you're not talking gibberish, you are actually talking about a pair of open toed shoes that us Aussies like to confuse with ladies underwear... yes, the famous thongs!

"Mad Bro and Mad Cuz" well no we are not saying cousin Larry and brother Henry are Mad, we are merely adopting the friendly and welcoming Kiwi Lingo, because everyone is your bro in Noo Zillund, even your sister in the pub after a few drinks at the infamous Camel bar in Auckland (at Nomads Fat Camel backpackers hostel)!

But the best of all was by far the Mad Chilly bin... My first thought was "Hmm a bin for Chillies... Kiwi's must like to preserve chillies and keep them cool, is this some kind of traditional New Zealand cooking method????... Well, as it turns out the Kiwi's are not so silly... a chilly bin... a bin to keep beer chilly... way to point out the obvious there Kiwi's, 10 points!!!

So with a little bit of fun and a little bit of adventure and an appetite to explore the many possibilities of New Zealand, Nomads are happy to offer our New Zealand backpackers the brand new Mad Choice New Zealand packages...

Just a little update on what has been happening here, we have completed a new undercover entertainment area which is another huge area for our Friday Nights. We've also just finished our stage, so in 2012 we will regularly be having live music which is very exciting.

Town of 1770 / Agnes Water has become a must-see destination for guests travelling both north and south along the east coast of Australia. Our beautiful hostel and town has a lot to offer; for example:

We have 3 hour surf lessons for $17

The famous Scooteroo Tour

Kayaking

and day tours out to Lady Musgrave

and that's just to name a few....

We are looking forward to working with everyone within the Nomads network and to welcome all our guests in 2012 who are travelling this way! We are always happy to help with enquiries you may have so visit Southern Cross Backpackers on this website or check us out and chat to the Southern Cross backpackers crew on facebook!
