Vintage backpacker meal recipes courtesy of Westend Sydney Backpackers

Fed up with noodles?! Some vintage backpackers meals can be produced with a little imagination, determination and a few extra dollars.  Here at Nomads Westend Backpackers Hostel, Sydney we suggest that you head to level one and start making some awesome friends from the array of people that haunt its very floor.  You’ll meet some crazy longtermers that are always willing to chat and chip in on a ‘vintage meal’.  The first thing to do is get four of five of you together and head to Coles.

A staple is pasta or rice which costs next to nothing and has more nutritional value then cardboard (noodles) and actually fills you up.  Throw in some veggies, meat if you’re feeling adventurous and grab a cheap Coles own pasta sauce and you have a cheap and tasty backpacker meal.

This is obviously the cheapest of all but if you have a little more of a budget you can stretch it to any of the following:

Recipe for Chilli Con Carne:
500grams minced steak
2 tablespoon oil or margarine
1 teaspoon salt
1 red capsicum
1 teaspoon paprika
1 cup water
2 onions
3-4 tomatoes
1 green capsicum
1 teaspoon chilli powder
1 bay leaf
2 cups cooked red kidney beans

Brown onions and meat well, add tomatoes, salt, capsicum , chilli powder, paprika, bay leaf and water. Cover and cook for 40 minutes. Add beans and simmer until heated through. Add more water if necessary. Serve with boiled rice or spaghetti.

Another backpacker classic for Nomads Westend Backpackers Hostel, Sydney is the Enchiladas with rice.  This is even easier because the recipe is on the Old El Paso box in Coles.  It is a piece of cake to make and one of the tastiest meals that you can produce on a backpacker budget.
It seems like I am stating the obvious but the amount of times I have seen many a backpacker just shovelling awful food into their mouths is just sickening, with just a little research and some preparation you can make some amazing meals and don’t have to be a Ramsey in the kitchen to do it.  You  eat every day of your life and everyone should know how to cook, even if its just five simple meals that doesn’t involve just throwing something on toast and calling it a meal.  I’m quoting when i say “not knowing how to cook is like not knowing how to f*#k” and lets be honest we all like to think we know how to do the latter so why not the former?
