Mountain Biking, Cairns

One of the coolest things to do around Cairns is Mountain Biking, and Cairns has some of the worlds best tracks here not too far away from the city.  So first thing you need to do if you don’t have your own mountain bike is to hire one. You can do this from a number of hire places around Cairns for a small price.

Now your all geared up and need to know where to go.
For those of you who just want to cruise and not do anything too extreme there are a number of places you can go. Around the streets of Cairns in the Edge Hill and Areoglen area you will find nice parks and streets with great views and beautiful scenery.
Now if you want something a little more intense, why not try our World Championship course out at Smithfield.  About a 25 min ride north of Cairns City you will come across beautiful green rainforest which is actually the backdrop of the Aj Hackett Cairns Bungy. Take a left at the roundabout and head down until you hit the dirt road. From there on the right handside beside the Univerity you will see all the amazing tracks.

The big hill on the left is the Downhill track ridden by Nicolas Vouilloz, Mike King and Miss Giove just to name a few. Now this track is not for the faint hearted so if you want something still extreme but your  not as confident as others then the Cross Country Track is for you. You can find this all around the hills behind the Univerity building  just follow the tracks around there.   As an Ex Pro Mountrain Bike Rider I can recommend these tracks are great for training as well as just for cruising.

On your back to Cairns if you feel you have the energy why not head up to Kuranda or prehaps do this another day.
Kuranda is a steep but gradual climb along the road so watch out for traffic! You can go all the way to the top and hang in the beautiful township or head to Black Mountain Road, which is right in the middle of the rainforest. You will more than likey see loads of wildlife and if your lucky a cassowary or two. If you continue over an hour down the dirt road you will need to get yourself a permit to head into this part of the road as it is an aboriginal community. These can easily be picked up from the Cairns City Council, well worth it if you are fit and up for a long day out.

If not head back down the Kuranda range and when you get to the Look Out keep an eye out for a small overgrown track on the left hand side. This is a secret downhill track once again at an extreme level so please be careful, as this where I have had a couple of spills and I should have as I was one of the makers of this track!

If you need any other information on Mountain Biking or if you wish to go for a ride with a Mountain bike group please come down to Nomads Esplanade Backpackers Hostel, Cairns.
