Confessions of a settled Melbourne Backpacker
I now live in Melbourne and to be fair I’m an ex – backpacker. I am married to an Australian and now have my permanent residency. For most of my working life, I have worked in the travel industry – having started as a resort representative in Turkey way back in the 1980’s. In more recent years, I worked as a Tour Manager for Thomas Cook – which involved copious amounts of worldwide travel, in the summer and in the winter, I was Resort Manager for a major French ski resort.
It was difficult to know which career to choose next! What on earth could I do? What did I want to do? I spent many weeks searching through job ads in the papers and online. Then, I saw it. “Front Office Manager wanted for International Backpackers in Melbourne”. This was the job for me! I spent hours completing my application and then waited.
I started my job as Front Office Manager of All Nations Backpackers Hostel Melbourne a few months ago and I love it. I have backpacked all over the world and can quite honestly say that there is nowhere like All Nations. We have a great mix of people, everyone seems to get along, the bar is buzzing and fun and lots of people just dont leave! All Nations has a great location, right next to the ‘City Circle’ tram – which is a free tram that encircles the city of Melbourne. It is also a very short walk from the major attractions, sports arenas and shopping areas.
The team here are great and really seem to enjoy their work. We employ people from all over the world, so as you can imagine, there is never a dull moment! Reception is open 24 hours, so there is always someone to greet new arrivals. At reception we speak five different languages!
There is always something going on here. Whether we are organising a trip to the beach with a BBQ and beer or a football match with free beer afterwards. There are quiz nights and ladies nights in the bar too!
I always wondered what it would be like to be in one place. This is the first time in over 20 years that I have ’settled down’ and lived in one place and come to the same place of work every day. I love it. The world now comes to me!!
