Chantelle’s 15 cheap beauty tips!

Chantelle (from Nomads Noosa backpackers hostel) shares her 15 cheap beauty tips for backpackers!

While you’re backpacking, you’re stuck to some pretty strict budgets. Don’t let your budget ruin your style, use my 15 cheap beauty tips for backpackers and look a million bucks!

  1. Looking for that really sun kissed Aussie Surfer look? Add a little lemon juice to your shampoo and get out into the sun. The sun will naturally bring out your highlights.
  2. Skin feeling a bit yuck? Grab a large bowl of boiling water, hover your face over the bowl and pop a towel over your head (making a tent and trapping the steam), let the steam do its thing for 10-15 min it will leave you feeling fresh and yummy!
  3. For stronger nails, rub garlic on them. For whiter nails and to get rid of the yellowness, rub lemon on the whites. Try not to rub your eyes after these two tips!
  4. For whiter teeth, you can try to rub a little salt on them. Its exfoliation for your mouth!
  5. Lemon is as a natural toner and bleach. Use it as a cleanser, Soak cotton and apply to skin, and it acts as a great cleanser.. Also it is better if you dilute lemon by adding milk to it. Not suitable for dry skin
  6. Fruit peels refresh the skin. Rub the fruit side of the peel on your face, pat dry with cotton wool; don’t rinse. For Dry skin use apricot or peach. For Oily skin use pear. For acne use apple. Normal skin try grapes.
  7. Before popping on your make up for the night (or day!) do your normal cleansing routine and finish off with a little sunscreen, let it dry (10-15min) before applying your make-up. It acts as a great base and will help extend the life of your make up.
  8. For sunburn you can’t beat the natural plant aloe Vera, cut it from the plant split it and smother yourself in it. For extra cool relief pop the aloe Vera in the fridge first.
  9. Aloe Vera also works really well as a moisteriser in general, the great thing is that it grows crazy all over Australia so you can normally grab it for free. Otherwise the chemist should have an aloe Vera gel for about $8
  10. Egg white face mask. Its a bit yuck, but works a treat. Separate an egg into a bowl then apply the white to your face. Leave on for 5 min or so and rise. The protein in the egg will help restore and maintain your skins natural tone.
  11. For mosquito bites pop a little bit of clear nail polish over them. The itch will stop as soon as the polish dries and the polish will just peal off in a day or twos time!
  12. Treat dandruff by adding warm olive oil with a tablespoon or two of fresh lemon juice. Rub into your scalp gently, leave on for 15 min then rinse.
  13. Treat puffy eyes with avocados sliced in quarter-inch crescents. Place them under each eye and relax for 20 minutes.
  14. For blondes in need of a shampoo but no time to wash your hair, pop a little baby powder through the ends. This tip doesn’t really work for any other coloured hair as the white baby powder will show up.
  15. For super lush hair rise your hair under warm water and apply olive oil to the scalp and massage in. Then apply to the rest of your hair. Cover with a hight shower cap (or plastic bag) and leave on for half an hour at least, then shampoo as normal.
