Good Bye Paul!

The psychic Octopus Paul located in Oberhausen (Germany) is going to retire!  Paul was born in Weymouth, Dorset in January 2008 and shortly after his birth he got moved to the Sea Live Center Oberhausen Germany. He became a celebrity during the 2008  UEFA European Football Championship when he chose the box of the winning team four times out of six for the games the German Team played.  His predictions for the 2010 World Cup where even crazier! Paul was 100% right! He also predicted the 1:0 win for Spain versus the Netherlands in the final! Source’s say that a community in Galicia(Spain) collected 30.000Euro to transfer Paul to Spain to have him as an attraction for the local celebration called Fiesta del Pulpo. The Sea Live Center in Oberhausen rejected the offer. Paul had a lot of attention within the last two years and his owners think that he did a great job but he should get back to his normal everyday “Octopus Life”.

Every Tuesday the crew from Nomads Byron Bay will take you on a guided tour to the Cape Byron Bay Lighthouse, situated on the most easterly point of Australia! Visiting the iconic lighthouse has become a must for any visitor to Byron Bay. From the lookout, you will see pods of dolphins, and from May through to September, there is a very good chance of seeing the humpback whales migrating up the coast of Australia. Truly spectacular!

The view from the lighthouse looks north to Byron Bay and all the way up the coast to Queensland and the Gold coast, with views of Main Beach and Belongil, and all the way south along Tallows beach to Broken Head. It’s also the best spot in Byron Bay – and the first point in Australia- to see sunrise.

The semi finals and the finals of the Soccer World Cup are getting closer and closer. The world cup will be more interesting with the best teams left for the last finals. Lets start with waking up at 8 o’clock in the morning in a six bed dorm at Nomads Byron Bay backpackers hostel. You take a quick shower to save the environment and after that you get dressed in whatever clothes you want because it is a holiday. When going out of the hostel you check for the second time if you brought your key with you because you need it to get 20% off discount at the Black Sapote which is 50 meters away from the hostel.

After you have chosen a great breakfast and enjoyed it even more, you go back to the hostel to plan what to do today. The best way to do this is visit the MAD travel desk who will help you have a great day in Byron Bay. After a good chat you decide to go sea kayaking. This means you go to the beach to meet the guys from Go Sea kayak and after some interesting instructions you go to the sea and have the best time of your life.

First fun thing is that you have to beat the waves and after you have done that you will train the muscles to get out of the bay, but while doing this you get rewarded by the sea life. You will see huge turtles, dolphins and at the moment it is quite normal to spot a whale.

After this great experience you go back to the beach with the group and you will have a deserved lunch or high tea. While you are still thinking of this amazing sea-kayaking experience, you walk back to the hostel, which is close to the beach. Back in the hostel you talk some with other people about what you have done and they invite you to come with them to Byron Bay lighthouse to see the sun set and to spot some more whales. You decide to go with them but first you need a break to relax, which can be perfect in the hostel in the common room or in the TV-room.

At 3.00pm you meet the other guys and start walking up to the world famous Byron Bay lighthouse. The walk to the lighthouse is great and beautiful. You walk the whole way through the rainforest and you have a great view of the surfing beaches of Byron bay. After an hour walk you arrive at the light house and wait till the sun goes down. While waiting you will definitely see at least one whale passing by at this time of year. After you have taken  some amazing pictures of the sunset you go back to the hostel to have a dinner with your new made friends.

The day was really active and you feel a bit tired so you decide to go to bed to have a power nap of 1 hour. When you wake up you feel a lot better and you go downstairs to check what is on this night in Nomads Byron Bay backpackers hostel. Every night there is something to do and because you don’t want to make any plans you just follow the crowd and end up in one of the clubs Byron Bay has. Waking up the next morning you feel like doing something like yesterday again, but the problem is that you don’t know where you are. Go back to bed and enjoy where you are. Your day was amazing and the end is even better!!

Hope you have all been watching this crazy World Cup so far. Lots of shocks and upsets happening. None bigger than the World Cup favourite’s Spain shock 1-0 loss to Switzerland last night. Switzerland were huge underdogs going into this match but with a mix of hard work and a bit of luck they managed to shock the European champions. In Group H’s other game Chile edged out a valiant Honduras side 1-0 to take the three points on offer.
It was a disappointing night for the host’s South Africa who are now on the brink of elimination after a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Uruguay. The Hostel’s TV room has been full of backpackers every night glued to the action. Nomad’s Byron Bay Backpackers Hostel is buzzing and is gearing up for a massive weekend of fun!!
Tonight at Nomads Byron Bay Backpackers Hostel we are looking forward to World Cup action with Argentina vs South Korea, Greece vs Nigeria and France vs Mexico all on the menu!

Last weekend I went to Moreton Island, the biggest sand Island in the world. I stay in Nomads Byron Bay backpackers hostel and I had a long weekend off to do something nice. I decided to go to the Moreton Island to visit a friend of mine from Holland who is working at the Tangalooma Island resort. I booked my bus at the MAD travel desk in my hostel and went Friday morning at 11Am by bus to Brisbane. Arival in Brisbane was exactly 1.00Pm and the first useful thing I saw was the MAC-Donalds!! After a good lunch I went shopping in Brisbane to go prepared to Moreton Island. They don’t have a really good shop on the Island and everything is three times more expensive. After shopping I went to the train and bought a ticket to Doomben and from Doomben station to the wharf I took the bus. It all took me an hour to get from Brisbane to the wharf, but it is the cheapest way to get there.

The boat leaves every day a couple of times and I took the one at 5.00Pm. It takes an hour to go to Moreton Island, so I arrived at 6.00Pm. The first great welcome was my friend of course and the second great welcome were the wild dolphins who were swimming around the jetty. Friday night was just a talking night and after a good sleep and a great home made breakfast I started to walk around on the Island. The Island has some amazing sand dunes and if you go to the top of these dunes you have a great view of the with sand beaches and the blue see with the wrecks. The wrecks are in the water to work as a wave breaker for the sand dunes. In total there are 15 wrecks. Under water around the wrecks you’ll find an amazing wild life with beautiful fish, sea turtles, star fish and if you are lucky the dungeon.

I walked to the wrecks and shilled out at the beach to enjoy the sillence of an Island. The second day on the Island we wook up early to go sand boarding. Sand boarding is something great you have to do when you have the possibility to do it. The only thing you need is high sand dunes and a kind of a board where you can lie on. We did this in the desert of Moreton Island and it was great. The only thing that makes you really tired is that when you are down, you have to walk back to the top of the dunes through soft sand. After this adventure we got a boot to drive around on the ocean and to chill out for the afternoon. The third ans last day I went on a jet-ski in the morning, did a helicopter flight after that and chilled out the afternoon again to pack my stuff to go back to Brisbane.

I never have seen so many sea wild life and weird births in one weekend. It was great and relaxt to be there and after a beautiful weekend I’m happy to be back in Byron. Here at Nomads Byron Bay Backpackers Hostel we have the pleasure of having student interns from all over the world come and work with us for a preriod of their study. They live with us at the hostel, and beome an integral part of out team!! We are alway sad to see them go when their time with us has finished. We have just had one of our interns, the very talented Emilia, leave us a few weeks ago.

But before she left she put her awesome photography skills to work and photographed all of the BEAUTIFUL Nomads Byron Bay Backpackers Hostel staff. After receiving the link this morning I just had to share it with everyone!
