A daily missive from Nomads All Nations Backpackers Hostel Melbourne – written by a very happy employee.

I came to Melbourne just over a year ago and met up with an old friend whom I used to know in Europe. She is an Australian and lived in the UK for over 15 years. She introduced me to her very good childhood friend because she thought that I should have a boyfriend. It worked! We hit it off – and got married in July 2009. I now have my residency and am a pretty happy inhabitant of this marvellous city.

I have travelled all over the world many times and have never been or seen anywhere as great as Melbourne. I used to love San Francisco, New York, Vancouver, even Sydney but Melbourne beats them all.

Well, looking for a job wasn’t easy. I applied for LOADS of jobs and often didn’t even get a reply. That was, until I got a call from someone called Karl at Nomads All Nations Backpackers Hostel in  central Melbourne. I started working as Front Desk Supervisor a week later. It is awesome. Having worked in tourism for years, I thought I had seen it all. I hadn’t!

Every day is different. Every day is a challenge. Every day someone makes me laugh or shake my head (often in desperation). I worked for many years in ski resorts – and this place is better. No snow but still better! I truly believe that this is one of those places that you really will find hard to leave. And it isn’t just the city that makes you feel that way. I have watched the same people trying to check out day after day – and they are still here! This place has a great atmosphere. It is easy to make friends. The U Bar, downstairs, is an extraordinary place that helps you make new friends. Anything can happen, and does.

We have a great team at reception. Yvonne, Emily, Tony, Kay, Rocio, Anya, Gijs, Marie and Stefano. We all love working here especially when things go awry. Good mates are so important, especially at work.
