Part 2 in a series of the Joy of sleeping in dorm rooms! Make sure you read part 1 The Joy of Dorms (Sleep-talking).
Manners. A lost art. They go a long way. Traditionally manners have been instilled and maintained by a combination of family and society. But when you're backpacking, well, there's certainly no family members looking over your shoulder - or none who'll pull you up for any indiscretions anyway - and the society you're in is most likely somewhat foreign (yes, even the east coast of Australia is 'foreign' for lots of people). So what constitutes manners?
So here in Byron Bay we just had a backpacker make mention of someone else in their room talking in their sleep and it got me thinking. I've been staying and working in hostels for nearly 5 years now (it's a rough life ;)) and whilst I've encountered a great many sleep walkers - and probably a few drunkards who claimed they were sleepwalking - my experience with people sleep talking in dorms has been surprisingly limited.

I'm sure some people will think that there are only 5 things to do in Cape Tribulation rather than the top 5 things to do in Cape Tribulation, and yes, it is a very small place to visit. However, it may be small but you will most definitely not be bored, although the slightly batty female from my accommodation who opted out of a night walk in favour of watching The Bill on TV may feel differently. Cape Tribulation is essentially a mini village amongst the Daintree National Park and Rainforest but is increasingly becoming a destination to visit during your time in Cairns.

Despite what everyone thinks about Australia, the weather can take a turn for the worst especially over the winter period. I myself have been travelling up the popular backpacker trail of the east coast of Australia and having since arrived from Auckland, New Zealand to Sydney, Australia have only had a few days of brilliant weather.
However, despite what you also might think, Australia does have many activities that dont necessarily require great weather.

I've watched people trying to lug them on and off buses, up and down stairs, struggling to even walk down the road without doing themselves a serious back injury. It leads me to ask this question to the new wave of "flashpackers" currently travelling our shores. Is a backpack really an essential travel item ? Or do we just sit at home preparing to travel thinking to ourselves "I'm going backpacking that means I must buy a backpack".
