Even though working in Cairns means that I have been in this area for quite a while now, I still like to get out there and explore North Queensland during my days off. These explorations have allowed me to get to know and love this part of Australia... but also taught me a healthy respect for the wildlife of the region.
On some of my trips to the rainforest, I have encountered some huge pythons, seen crocodiles in the wild, and even helped remove a confused tree snake (completely harmless and actually quite cute) from the stairway here at Nomads Cairns Backpackers Hostel (where I work), however it was not until last week that I had my scariest encounter. This was with the deceptively cute little Rock Wallaby at Granite Gorge in the Atherton Tablelands.

‘Hallelujah’ accompanied by a tear or two was my first word after our plane landed successfully in Auckland more than a week ago. Back then I thought ‘Oh, gosh, we finally arrived!’. My boyfriend didn’t know whether my tears were a sign of joy or the opposite.
The truth is that after a couple of months of talking and organizing the whole around the world trip, I finally felt relief with every single part of my body. Honestly, I was glad that we’d reached our final destination and were stable on the ground (at least for the coming five months or so).
Looking for something interesting to do? Maybe you think you have done it all here in Cairns...reef, rainforest, and all the adrenalin activities you could stomach. Well..that's not all the region has to offer. For those backpackers wanting to experience some more of North Queensland's interesting landscape....why not head underground!
Just past the Tableland Region in Cairns, there are a variety of sites that backpackers can enjoy some of the geological wonders that the region has to offer. The closest site to marvel at the wonders that can be found underground are the Crystal Caves in Atherton.

Every year we see the same pattern emerging, boy meets girl. Then 2 hours, half a packet of cigarettes and a box of goon later they have agreed to change all their travel plans, are madly in love and going to travel the world together.

On a brisk Saturday morning in the small town of Waitomo, slightly West of the center of the North Island of New Zealand, a small group of travel agents on a familiarization trip including myself, arrived in a convoy of Spaceship Campers to experience the wonders of the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves. There are hundreds underground cave systems in the Waitomo area, many of which are still yet to be mapped. A number of companies have been set up in Waitomo that offer tours throughout the caves that run year round. From the well-known Black Water Rafting trips, to all out 7 hour underground Caving tours that include abseiling through waterfalls, slipping and sliding through the maze of underground glowing caves.
